Boy Who Refuses Cancer Treatment Flees With Mother

A judge issued an arrest warrant Tuesday for Colleen Hauser, mother of a 13-year-old boy resisting chemotherapy after she and the boy missed a court hearing on his welfare.
District Judge John Rodenberg of Brown County also ordered that Daniel Hauser be placed in a foster home and be sent for an immediate examination so he can get treated for Hodgkins lymphoma.
“The court’s priority at this point is to try to get Daniel Hauser and get him the care he needs,” Rodenberg said.
The cancer is considered highly curable with chemotherapy and radiation, but Daniel quit chemo after a single treatment and with his parents opted instead for “alternative medicines,” citing religious beliefs. That led authorities to seek custody. Rodenberg last week ruled that Daniel’s parents, Anthony and Colleen Hauser, were medically neglecting their son.

I can’t believe someone would do that to their own child. He has CANCER. It won’t just “magically disappear.” I hope that bitch burns in hell for murdering her son. I’ve known a LOT of people with cancer. And anyone who thinks that treatment is not neccessary is the most thick-headed, naive, idiot there is. How can someone be SO ignorant? That’s the only way to fix the disease. Shame on that horrible woman for being such an awful mom. I hope she gets what she deserves. Whether that is a swift kick in her face or a bullet through her damn head. NO CHILD DESERVES TO DIE LIKE THAT, especially at the fault of his incompetent mother.
I read that IF this 13 year old dies without chemo, the parents can be charged with neglect, child abuse, or even manslaughter. They want to make the parents (or mom) responsible/accountable for the outcome of the treatment the boy receives. So, let me ask you a question: If the 13 year old is forced to have chemo through this Judge’s order, and is killed by the chemo (like many people are) ……shouldn’t the Judge be held just as responsible and accountable for the outcome? Yes indeed, as this judge is taking the life of this 13 year old into his own hands, and now making a different (and unwanted) medical treatment mandatory. And IF the boy dies because he was forced to use chemo through the order of this Judge, then I would think the Judge too can be charged with child-abuse or manslaughter. What is fair for one human being, should be equally fair for the other. Under the constitution we all should be treated equally. Treating others as equals is what makes this nation great. One person’s point of view is just as valuable and important as another persons point of view. * There is NOT one person who is less human than another.
Chemo may be the choice for many, and rightly so, but the key word here is “CHOICE”. 13 year old girls can make their own choice on whether or not to have an abortion. (And having abortions can sometimes lead to the death of that girl) So, certainly this 13 year old boy (and his family), can make his/their own choice when it comes to which treatments he prefers.
I am one of many who HAVE met people who are alive and well today after battling cancer through alternative medicine and a change in the type of nutrition they have in their diet. People DO survive alternative treatments and without the horrific side affects (like chemo and radiation treatments have). The media is only giving half the story. Some statements that have been made are misleading.
And since the 13 year old had ill effects to the first Chemo treatment/round he DID have (the effects were so bad, that he thought it would kill him), Then who’s to say it WON”T kill him?
This family is being treated like criminals, which they are not. Why? Because they want their freedom to choose the medical treatment they believe will best help their son. (It’s not like they were not doing anything about his health). No “medical treatment” decision choice, should EVER end up as a “criminal decision” for anyone. (It can backfire even on a Judge) Sometimes there is no “right’ answer. Sometimes there is more than one “right” answer. I believe a wise judge would leave that decision and the consequences to those involved. And I think, this Judge, would be wise to reconsider what he doing to this family and to this 13 year old boy, and reverse his ‘order’.
Lets make it clear, this is not an issue about medicine. This is about ABSOLUTE POWER! Every day the courts are one step closer to taking our inalienable rights away from We the People. They do not care about your health or your children, if they did, health care would be socialized or at the very least, affordable. The legislative branch of the American Government is bought and sold by big business. Doctors have become glorified drug peddlers for pharmaceutical companies and many elite lawyers and judges are getting paid kick backs. Don’t believe me try to get your child seen by a doctor if you have no money! If this continues we will all be court ordered one day to “take our medicine.”
Not many cancers have a success rate of 90% with chemo and radiation. The reason the mom fled was not just because of the court date. Recent scans showed that their “holistic” treatments were not working because the tumor had significantly increased in size. Children handle chemo so much better than adults and six rounds is actually not that much chemo. As a pediatric nurse the actions of the mother is appalling. He should not be running round in his condition and Mexico is not the best place for him considering the still lingering problem of swine flu. I actually use homeopathic medicine, ones that have been tested, deemed safe and have been around for many decades. There is a reason why acupuncture and other “alternative” therapies are deemed okay. There is scientific evidence. Meaning a statistically valid study that has stood up to peer revue and can be replicated. And think people that 90% versus 5% survival rate. It has nothing to do with the drug companies and some conspiracy nonsense. These are facts that have stood up to scrutiny. Also this child claims to be some medicine man and that he didn’t want the chemo to interfere with this. Go to any of the news stations in Minnesota and you will here all of the information on the family. This is like the autism and vaccine debate with no valid research showing this connection. And on this note, current research has shown a genetic component and shows why boy are prone to this. Also, I have cared for many children that are autistic whose parent refused all vaccinations. So why are they still autistic? Use your brains people. God wants us to have faith, but not go on faith alone. We have to help ourselves as well. There was a recent case were a child died from new onset type 1 diabetes because parent prayed that the symptoms would go away and this child would get better. By the time help was obtained, the child went into a coma due to ketoacidosis, which is caused by the body breaking down ketones for energy because the body has no insulin to breakdown glucose so that the body can use it. If your pancreas is broken, it is broken and it is very treatable. These parents were prosecuted for manslaughter.
Let the family decide for themselves. That is their right and nobody should be criminalized for not going along with “established medical opinion”. Especially when medical history is replete with examples of bad and harmful advice that has caused immeasurable suffering. Just look at how dramatically medical opinion has changed over the centuries: In the Middle Ages the doctors (those educated in the healing arts) thought that bleeding people was the best way to cure most ailments. As recently as the 60′s DDT was still considered “safe” and many thousands of DES babies were born to parents who listened to their doctors instead of their common sense. Even today, most vaccines are STILL full of mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, etc and are foisted upon an unsuspecting public as “good public health policy” (for their own good) as autism rates explode.
The profit-driven pharmaceutical giants and their AMA supported allopathic model (cut it out, burn it out or poison it out, never mind what actually CAUSES the disease) have successfully co-opted the legal system to support their goals and profits. This case illuminates in chilling terms how those who dare question their doctor can find themselves on the wrong side of the legal system with the full power of the state to coerce families into compliance.
In a hundred years everyone will look back upon the current cancer treatments as completely barbaric. But that will be far too late for the family in question who is hunted down like common criminals to be forced into chemo injections by Sheeple like Mitzi who blindly follow whatever they’re told and won’t spend any serious time researching the alternatives.
Wake up, start thinking for yourselves and fight for your freedom of choice before it’s completely gone…
And furthermore, Todd, I’m glad I have never lived in a state where refusing to have your childrens medical needs taken care of wasn’t abuse. In MANY states even dental health is included in that. His cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer. Perhaps, Todd, you have never heard of elderly abuse…..child or care taker allows parent or patient to die or doesn’t seek treatment for thier illness or injuries……someone goes to jail, thank God.
His mothers line of thinking is, “yeah, he’ll die but when he does he’ll go to heaven because we followed the advise of some religious nutter who believes seeking medical intervention is a sin” I pray they find them and put her butt in prison.

As a cancer survivor who was diagnosed at 20 and did 3 cycles of chemo this is a sickening story! Yes chemotherapy and surgery sucks but I am still here today 5 years later, without the proper treatment I would be DEAD. Help the child he is not informed enough to make his own decision I think the state did the right thing! I am in pharmacy school and I can say that homeopathic medicine does NOT work the main ingredients are too diluted to really do anything for the patient. The parents should have the chemo done and do the homeopathic medicine at the same time as long as it does not interfere with the chemo. Shame on these parents for sitting around and watching their son die, this is disgusting. Thanks God for my parents. “On Daniels Side” you are insane, the pharmaceutical companies are not out to get people do some informed research stop with the conspiracy theories its getting old.
Chemo DOES NOT WORK. It kills the body. When you look at statistics, over 60% of DOCTORS say they would NOT take Chemotherapy or Radiation. My dad had esphageal cancer and went through Chemo and radiation. After x number of treatments, they said the cancer was not going away. They said there was nothing more they could do and gave him 3 months to live. The Chemo was almost killing him and he couldn’t even get out of bed. In 4 months he was gone.
So do not let anyone FORCE this boy to undergo such a barbaric treatment.
If this was my child, I would make sure that he got every single chance to get well. I would have him get the chemo _and_ the “holistic” “homeopathic” medicines too. I would fight the cancer until one or the other of us won. But what I would do is not the point.
In the United States, we are guaranteed freedom of religion. That means that we are allowed to worship God (or any god or no god) as our conscience allows. Working in a public school, I can tell you that there are families that choose not to vaccinate their children for religious reasons. Jehovah Witnesses, among others, are allowed to refuse blood transfusions for themeselves & their children. Why, then, is it so shocking to people that a mother cites religious reasons for refusing chemotheraphy for her minor child? Personally, I think that’s nuts. But as I said, that’s not the point. It makes me sad that a child will probably die from a very treatable cancer. I pray for his healing, and I support his mother’s decision. And I think the judge in this case should go back to the law books to look up the First Amendment: CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW RESPECTING AN ESTABLISHMENT OF RELIGION, OR PROHIBITING THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. (All caps used to stress the point, not to yell at anyone!)
The child is almost certainly going to die if he doesn’t get treatment. It is in the best interests of the child to get treatment and his parents are not allowing it. The parents are therefore not acting in the best interests of their child. When that is the case, there should be some kind of intervention
It is a known fact in the medical profession that holistic medicine/treatment does NOT work. The type of cancer the boy has is highly treatable. There is no reason he should be allowed to die because his mother has totally become obsessed with holistic alternatives which don’t work.
God bless and protect Daniel and his mother against a government driven by the pharmaceutical industry’s greed and cheered on by a population of sheep whose knowledge of anything more than last night’s American Idol results derives from whatever is being funneled into their empty heads by the mainstream media. Chemotherapy deprives the cancer sufferer of any sort of quality of life. The standard of success for the 95% (really?) survival rate is 5 years. Had Daniel blindly followed the directives of the “medical experts” and actually survived the 5 years, what would his life had been like? Dr. Gupta crows the boy could look forward to never having to deal with this again – so secondary cancers, late effects, non existent immune system, and waiting for the other shoe to drop for the rest of whatever is left of his life don’t count? Won’t happen? Are even unlikely? I don’t think so.
This case should never have been publicized – the providers who are fueling this chase get their names in the paper and create a cacaphony of curses against a family who should be supported and comforted during a horrible time in their lives. Instead the mother has to flee and make criminals out of herself and her son. Law enforcement resources being poured into capturing and forcing death on to a child who is already sentenced to no normal life (but their names are in the paper too!)
The greatest regret parents who lose their children to cancer have is having subjected their child to the ravages of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation dictated by treatment protocols and administered by those who will nod their heads and sigh because the patient “couldn’t fight the cancer and the cancer won” while collecting their $52. per hour. The child’s final days are full of pain, strangers, medical rules and disruption of all normal body functions. I wouldn’t wish that on a dog – and I’m no animal lover. If we are not in a position to help Daniel and his mother get the treatment they want, then we need to mind our own business and pray we never have to walk in their shoes. Those of us who have know better than to judge them and their decisions.
where is your call to side with anyone on this what if the boy doesnt want the treatment and the mother loves him enough to support him. Why does percentages have to play into it and statistics why should they have to wait to try a alternative method. Then here is a really good one if there religion is against it who are you to say its not their right. That is crossing the line of freedom of religion and choice is it not. There are so many religions in day to day things and medication and such that do things differently you want to force them all to take the best method regardless of belief. If they catch them and the child says no i dont want chemo you going to force it upon him what then thats a lawsuit i would love to be representing the boy on. I would love those that dont believe in birth control to be made to take it or those that have kids with diseases that may kill them at birth be told they cant. You keep taking away our rights we will have catered meals, same car, same house, same items in every single persons day and be like a zombie doing everything by some written rules.
If it helps you i would keep my child in chemo but that is my choice if my child wanted to find another route i would respect that and do my best to find it out of my love for that child i would cry on my insides every day but my love for my childs wishes would prevail. I would talk to them about it everyday but in the end its there life.
Mitzi and Danielle are both wrong. Refusing medical intervention is not abuse (that’s just an absurd statement) and parents do have the right to kill their child, it happens every day. Sounds like the only difference between the mothers choice if her child lives or dies though – is if the child is still inside her womb or not. Abortion is ok, you can reach in and rip the child out and kill it, but you can’t let the same child die from cancer naturally after it has left the womb.
TO THOSE LOOKING FOR ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS.
First let me state that I DO NOT agree with the mother’s decision to flee from a court order. That just makes the situation worse. However I DO agree with her choice and that of the father and the boy, to not go the chemotherapy route, especially when there are more safer and effective alternative options available. It should be the choice of the boy and family to what option they choose, even if that option is not shared by their current doctor.
The choice of what type of medical treatment one will take is a PERSONAL CHOICE. It is your choice and your choice alone no matter what your doctor tells you. But you need to explore your options and there are many out there, both Alternative and Conventional. I made a choice to walk away from conventional medicine when I was told 11 years ago that I needed bypass surgery for a blocked artery. Why? Because of the BS rush and scare tactics of my cardiologist. He basically said that if I didn’t have bypass surgery really soon, I could be dead within a month. They both have been successfully treating patients from all over the world for 30 years. If they were quacks they would have been shut down long ago and no one would be getting better under their care. Even the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes their care. Recently the FDA has given permission to Dr. Burzynski to proceed with Phase III Clinical trials of his Antineoplaston therapy for the most deadly form of cancer: Diffuse Brainstem Glioma (DBSG).

You can use this website to find local doctors that practice Alternative and Conventional & Complimentary Medicine by just typing in how many miles from your zip code you wish to search. Though Dr. Whitaker changed my life for the better, he is in California and I am in New York. So using the ACAM website helped me find another Orthomolecular doctor closer to me.
I cannot recommend any other websites for info because I only know of these three. However these three are the best that I have found and are good choices to get you started on the road to better health.

I think the main issue here is that the cancer the child was diagnosed with has a 90% chance of being cured with chemotherapy. Without it, the predicted survival rate is a mere 5%. I would side with the mother on this if there wasn’t such a disparity between the odds of him living and dying with treatment. Chemotherapy is rough on the body, but for children, who are usually much more resilient than older adults, sometimes it makes sense.
As for the alternative methods of treatment? Tests on Daniel have shown, without doubt, that their alternative methods aren’t working. The tumor has continued to grow in size. At this point, she is letting her child die, and I do not believe she has a right to do that. Once her methods were proven wrong, she should have taken him in for chemo.
Parents have rights, but not the right to kill their child.
wow, there are a lot of mean people here. I believe deeply in faith and prayer. however, if he had a broken bone, what would they do then? Pray that God heals the break and go on with their life? Perhaps if he had a freak accident and had a gaping wound and would bleed to death without medical treatment right away……My heart breaks for the boy and his parents. To refuse medical intervention is abuse. I can see going the holistic route if the chemo wasn’t working, but come on. I would move heaven and earth to do whatever it took to make my children well and would protect my children with my life. God gave us physicians. there are so many Doctors who ARE DEEPLY religious. Why not thank God for man’s ability to create medical science that heals us? God help this little boy and this family.
personally the decision lies in the parents and the boy once the court breaks this then they should be responsible for everyones child and the medical costs that go with it. Forcing someone to get medical care that opts for another avenue then hunting them down like criminals cause they dont agree is not justice. Get real criminals off the street and stop giving them baby sentences and leave parents to take care of their families. assuming, always done what she thought was best for this child. And
now, because she doesnt want to poison him, were calling her a child
abuser? That is the biggest load of crap i have ever heard in my life. How
dare you tell someone that they HAVE to take that option? And how dare you
call her a child abuser? What is wrong with this country and this government
when you can tell someone how theyre going to be treated for something and
not give them a choice?
And no, maybe he cant read or write very well, but that by no means says that he
is ignorant, that he cant make an informed decision on whether or not he’d like
to be poisoned or not. And another thing. I would like to see that judge go
through pregnancy and labor and 13 years of being a mother and tell me you
would let ANYONE tell you you have to poison your child.
And who is really to say that the chemo is definitely going to work?
And you what? I dont blame that woman at all for not wanting to put him through that.
If she thinks that she would rather not make him sicker to make him better (which when you think about doesnt really make much sense now does it?) if she thinks she can find a less damaging way to help him than that should be hers and NO ONE ELSE’S decision.
