Law School Dean Resigns To Run For California AG Seat

John Eastman (R), Dean of Chapman University School of Law, announced that he is running for California's Attorney General.

The dean of California’s Chapman University School of Law says he is stepping down to seek the Republican nomination for state Attorney General.

To date, only one candidate, state Sen. Tom Harman is seeking the GOP nomination to succeed Democrat Jerry Brown, as the Golden State’s chief legal officer.

John Eastman, who teaches Constitutional Law, Property, Legal History, First Amendment and Constitutional Litigation Clinic, told students and alumni in a letter on Thursday that his resignation will take effect on Monday.

Before being appointed dean of Chapman’s law school in 2007, Eastman was founding director of the Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, a public interest law firm affiliated with the Claremont Institute, a conservative Southern California think tank.

Eastman previously served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.  He received a J.D. from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in government and political philosophy from the Claremont Graduate School and joined the Chapman faculty in 1999.  In 2007, he became dean of the law school.

The school says Chapman criminal law professor Scott Howe will serve as interim dean. A national search for a new dean will be conducted.

Eastman will remain a faculty member at Chapman.
