UC Hastings College of Law Announces New Chancellor and Dean

The University of California’s Hastings College of the Law announced Wednesday it has selected law professor Frank Wu as its new chancellor and dean.

Wu, 42, will assume his new position on July 1, 2010, and will have a salary of $350,000., He is currently teaching legal history, immigration law, business law and evidence at the Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C.  Previously he was dean at Wayne State University Law School in Detroit.

“Frank Wu is a brilliant, world-class scholar and national leader in higher education. He was selected because of his powerful strategic vision for raising our 131-year-old law school to a new level. He has the experience and commitment to develop unprecedented private support for the College,” said Bruce Simon, Chair of the Board of Directors of University of California Hastings College of the Law.

Wu is the author of “Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White” and co-author of “Race, Rights and Reparation: Law and the Japanese American Internment.”

Hastings is currently facing challenges from the Christian Legal Society(CLS) regarding the school’s policy in refusing formal recognition of the local CLS campus chapter.  Hastings insists that CLS must be inclusive to all people including homosexuality, regardless if it is contrary to the student members religions beliefs and convictions.

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the right of University of California’s Hastings College of Law to impose its policy against “discrimination” on the basis of religion and sexual orientation on a student religious group seeking formal recognition.

On December 7, the U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez, (Docket No. 08-1371).
